OPEN STUDIOS AND THE NOTORIOUS B.U.Z.

Open Studios is happening at my building Nov. 13 & 14, but I am taking a pass.

While I love the experience of seeing folks face to face, it’s always been a team effort, and my mom is a key part of the team. She is curious about everyone, remembers faces and stories from years past, and makes change from the Snoopy Lunch Box. Buzzy is in her 80s, so we decided not to risk exposure to the virus. Here’s a poem she wrote for all of you:

For many years I climbed those stairs
Looking forward to my mini-chair
Behind the school desk, atop
My Snoopy Lunch coin filled box

Familiar faces , with names now tossed
Sharing memories of joy or loss
I will miss you all, you filled my day
There will be a future so the lunch box stays.

BUY ART, HELP SICK KIDS

The National Cartoonist Society has teamed up with St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

St. Jude is a research hospital that gives free care to kids with cancer, so there are a bunch of us donating original art for an online auction Oct. 27-Nov. 3. For the last bunch of years I’ve used a tablet to draw my strip, but I went back to pen and paper for this one strip so it could be auctioned off.

A lot of the art for the auction pays homage to various favorite comic book characters— turns out it’s the 80th anniversary of Aquaman and Plastic Man, and I went to town with that.

Here’s a little teaser— it’s in color but the original art is black and white. You’ll be able to see the whole toon online and in your Sunday paper on Oct. 24th!

INTERVIEW WITH FUN HOME AUTHOR ALISON BECHDEL

Got a whole hour to ask Alison about her personal life and talk about her latest book The Secret To Superhuman Strength. Here’s the You Tube link of our talk at Columbus College of Art and Design as part of 2021 Cartoon Crossroads Columbus Fest.

As my partner Kristin and I were exploring Columbus we came across this statue of Mr. Muscles himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

NATIONAL CARTOONISTS SOCIETY COMICS FEST OCT 16 & 17

Next weekend is the NCSfest! There is a whole program in store, along with some awards being handed out. (I am up for one of them but you never know. The link shows a very fancy video. ) Here are are just some of the programs they’re cooking up:

2021 HOT CHOCOLATE RUN FOR SAFE PASSAGE

One of the things I am most proud of is creating the mug design each year for a 5k charity run that benefits survivors of domestic abuse. Shameless plug— I’ll be running again this year if you want to sponsor me! Each year’s mug showcases some new hijinx the polar bear and the penguin are up to. Here’s a teaser of one little part of it.
