Want To Learn Cartooning? I’m Teaching My 4 Day Class June 15-18, This Time Virtually

CenterForCartoonStudies_Online.jpg

This class will be live Monday thru Thursday June 15-18. I’ll teach you all the tricks I know about getting ideas and crafting a cartoon. Here’s the official description:

Cartoonist Hilary Price, known for her syndicated strip Rhymes with Orange, leads this 4-day intensive workshop which examines the essentials for producing your own single panel comics – characters, environment, plot and the gag. A combination of lectures and studio time provides an in depth look into the form and an opportunity to leave with completed works. Writing and Drawing Single Panel Comics is for both beginner and advanced adult and college students.

Fun With YouTube- The Drawn Together Comics Jam

Along with the rest of the world, I’ve been zooming up a storm, and called up some cartoonist pals for a comic jam. What’s that, you ask? We create a 4 panel cartoon on the spot! So far, I’ve done them with Baby Blues cartoonist Rick Kirkman, Bizarro cartoonist Wayno, and Rhymes With Orange co-creator Rina Piccolo. (Not all of them are posted yet but will be in the coming weeks! ) Check them out on my YouTube Channel.

I Showered With A Pulitzer Prize Winner

Back in March I was in Colorado to talk to my nephew’s fourth grade class and see the sites. One of my favorites was the home studio of pal Jim Borgman, former editorial cartoonist and now half of the Zits comic dream team.

Jim still draws Zits with pen and ink! He let me sit at his desk and touch his office supplies! (I promised not to steal any.)

Notice his butt is on pictures of dogs.

Notice his butt is on pictures of dogs.

Here’s my story that went with it:

I am weeding my garden this past weekend when my neighbor comes over to confess: He feeds Tom wet food. I think of the expensive diet kibble in my pantry. I tell my neighbor the vet’s warning — Tom needs to trim down. My neighbor says, “How about half a can then?” We negotiate down to two spoonfuls. I do not tell my neighbor the vet’s latest suggestion — throwing treats down the hall to get him moving. “Go long,” I imagine the neighbor shouting as he hurls a pound of salmon across his backyard. (Maybe now, with the agreed-on austerity measures, it’s just half a pound.)

This is the second neighbor this year who’s come clean … but it’s a big neighborhood.

So how does my cat inform my cartoon, and why does he plant himself on my newspaper? Because he brings chaos to order, which makes funny things happen.

He is the answer to the joke, “Where does a 15-pound orange cat sit? … Wherever he wants.”
